What Are Sublimation Transfers?

A sublimation transfer is a design printed with sublimation ink onto specialty paper. Under heat and pressure, the ink turns into a gas and bonds with the polyester coating or polyester fibers in the blank. Once the item cools, the design is permanent, smooth, and vivid.

That chemistry is why sublimation works differently from DTF or UV DTF. Sublimation ink does not sit on top of the product. It needs polyester to bond to. For fabric, that means high-polyester garments produce the strongest color. For hard goods, it means choosing items with a proper sublimation coating.

Sublimation also does not print white ink. Any white area in your design will take on the color of the blank underneath it. This makes white and light-colored blanks the easiest place to begin. A white polyester shirt can show bright, clean colors. A black cotton shirt cannot be sublimated with a standard transfer.

How to Prepare a Sublimation Design

Your artwork needs to fit the product and print in the correct orientation. For most apparel and flat blanks, print the design as a mirror image. When you place the transfer face-down on the item, it will read correctly after pressing.

Tumblers, mugs, and other curved items need extra attention. A wrap design should be sized for the usable print area, not simply the full dimensions of the blank. Leave enough room around the seam so the artwork does not overlap awkwardly or leave a visible gap. When creating custom files, use high-resolution artwork, ideally 300 DPI at final print size.

How to Press Sublimation Transfers

Start with the instructions supplied for your specific blank. There is no single temperature and time that fits every sublimation item. Shirts often use different settings than mugs, metal panels, or coated tumblers. Treat the blank manufacturer's recommendation as your starting point, then document what works in your workspace.

For a basic polyester shirt, preheat the press and allow it to reach a stable temperature. Lint-roll the garment before pressing. Tiny fibers can interfere with the ink and create blue or dark specks in light areas. Pre-press the shirt briefly to remove moisture and wrinkles.

Place the printed transfer ink-side down against the fabric, then secure it with heat-resistant tape if there is any chance it could shift. Cover the transfer with clean butcher paper to protect the upper platen. Press using the recommended temperature, time, and medium pressure for the garment.

When the press opens, remove the paper carefully and consistently. Some blanks are best peeled hot, while others benefit from a brief cool-down. Follow the blank instructions, wear heat gloves when needed, and keep the removed paper away from the item. If the paper falls back onto the hot surface, it can create a ghost image.

For tumblers and mugs, the same rules apply with more focus on contact. The transfer must sit flat against the coated surface, with no loose areas or wrinkles. Tape it firmly, apply the recommended wrap or press pressure, and rotate only if your equipment instructions call for it. Uneven pressure is a common cause of faded patches on curved products.

Common Sublimation Problems and What They Mean

Faded color usually points to the blank, heat, pressure, or transfer contact. First, verify that the blank is truly sublimation-ready. Then check whether your press reached the right temperature and whether the transfer was tight against the surface. On apparel, low polyester content will also reduce brightness.

A blurry shadow around the design is called ghosting. It happens when the paper moves during or immediately after pressing. Use enough heat-resistant tape, open the press smoothly, and lift the item or paper without sliding either one.

Brown marks or scorched areas can mean excessive heat, too much press time, or a dirty heat platen. Protective paper should be clean on every press. Reusing a sheet that has ink on it can transfer unwanted color onto the next product.

If your design looks dull before pressing but becomes bright after heat, that is normal. Sublimation prints often look muted on paper. Judge the final color only after the transfer has been pressed onto a compatible blank.

The best beginner projects are simple, repeatable, and easy to check for quality. A white polyester shirt with a centered single-color or full-color design is a solid first project.
